Day 2 – The White Sahara

After a restful night and breakfast at the hotel, you will continue the safari toward Kilpisjärvi. The further north you travel, the more rugged the landscape will become; there will be no more pines but only stunted fell birches. Wolverine, wolf, bear and moose together with numerous smaller wild animals call this their home. If you are lucky, you may even spot a rare arctic fox. There are lots of reindeer in Lapland – many more in fact than humans. The Northwest arm of Finland is sometimes called the White Sahara and you will see why: in the pure whiteness of a sunny day, sunglasses are an absolute must. En route there is a stop to enjoy packed lunch and you will also get to try your hand ice fishing on a frozen lake. The catch may include for example greyling, trout or even arctic char. On the Norwegian side of the border the landscape will immediately become more mountainous. With increasing height, the round peaks of the fells will become more pointed. You will drive towards the sharp point of the Paras fell. The destination is the bottom of the Lyngen fjord with its idyllic Norwegian fjord scenery. Here the deep blue sea is surrounded by high mountain peaks. The brave at heart may want to dip in the Arctic Ocean, but be prepared for an icy bath! Packed lunch is served en route. Total driving distance is approx. 160 km. After returning to Kilpisjärvi by snowmobiles, you get to relax in a hot sauna. Accommodation in Lapland Hotels Kilpis.
